James Armour's The Selkie Race going from Barra Head lighthouse in the south to Ness lighthouse at the top of the north of Lewis. James swam, run and cycled massive distance's over the full chain of the islands in the Outer Hebrides to raise funds for the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. He had a great support squad looking after him with my part being to swim now and again with James across the Sounds of Barra and Harris, which I was honoured to do. On the sound of Harris, James got out at a beach on Killegray, running over the over before getting back in the sea to swim towards Ensay then to the slipway at Leverburgh. Was fantastic to be part of this amazing extreme endurance athlete's support team. Unfortunately my GoPro was playing up during the sound of Harris, so no photo's in the sea from there. James started at 0348 on Friday morning and finished at 0840 on Sunday morning. What a legend! Hi Colin, I am an open water swimmer looking to finally begin plans to attempt a 'bucket list' swim... which for me is to swim the Sound of Barra... I was initially trying to get in touch with James Armour (of the Selkie Challenge!) as he is the only person I have read about who has done this swim... but I see on your blog that you have also done this! I have visited the Outer Hebs several times and swum around Wiay (Fiay, depends how you like to pronounce it!) to the East of Uist, the length of Ullswater & the Scilly Isles (inter-island challenge)... so I have some idea of how hard this swim is. The first step on the journey for me is to get in touch with someone who has done this swim to ask some questions about currents / best time of year / suitable skipper & safety crew. I do not use Facebook or other social media so would appreciate an email reply, or a message / phone call [0705 592544] if you think you can help me.
